Geography

Sukhothai Location


Sukhothai
is located on the lower edge of the northern region, 427 kilometres north of Bangkok or some 298 kilometres south of Chiang Mai. The north borders Prae,the south borders Khamphaeng Phet,the east borders Pitsanulok and Uttaradit and the west borders Tak and Lamphang.

 

The province covers some 6,596 square kilometres and is divided into 9 districts: Muang Sukhothai,
Ban Dan Lan Hoi, Khiri Mat, Kong Krailat, Sawankhalok, Si Nakhon, Si Samrong, Si Satchanalai and Thung Saliam.

The provincial tree is Afzelia xylocarpa.

The provincial flower is lotus.

Ramkhamheang National Park

The forest and mountain range area are mostly the arae of national park. Ramkhamhaeng National Park covers Sukhothai district, Ban Dan Lan Hoi district and Khirimat district. Khao Luang is the highest mountain range of Sukhothai.

Si Satchanalai National Park covers the part of Si Satchanalai district and Thung Salaim District. It possesses many natural sites like Tad Dao waterfall, Tad Duen waterfall, Huai Sai Khao waterfall, Thara Wasan cave, etc.

Beside 2 national parks, there are 2 historical parks which are Sukhothai Historical Park and Si Satchanalai Historical Park. On December, 1991 Sukhothai Historical Park was declared the World Heritage site by UNESCO.
